Aloft Hotel Liverpool Review: 5/5
Liverpool has some spectacular pieces of architecture. In a city with so much culture and history, there are some absolute gems in the city centre which have been unfortunately left to degrade in the past. But not anymore! Over the last decade, the city has been embracing these stunning builds. Upgrading amazing buildings for the hospitality, leisure and retail sector has brought a new lease of life to the city. For the former Royal Insurance building, this is one of those cases. Aloft Hotel Liverpool is part of Starwood International Hotels group and they have turned this Grade II listed building into something glorious.
£18 million was spent on bringing this building, which was sadly abandoned in the ’80s, into the present. Looking at the Aloft hotel from the lobby to the restaurant, the bar and the rooms it seems like money has been very well spent. At the same time, traditional aspects of the building have remained. Circular stairways and stained glass for example remain, a reminder of it’s past. An interesting balance of modernity and history.
Upon arriving we found that the hotel is ideally located for access to the best attractions of the city. The Royal Liver Building and Albert Docks are only a short 5-10 minute walk away. The city also has a superb shopping scene at Liverpool One; about two minutes walk down the road. The hotel is also suitably close to the bustling commercial district and houses 5 meeting rooms to cater for business travellers. As a result of all this, Aloft hotel Liverpool is positioned well for a range of travellers, making it a popular destination for many people. For those travelling with pets, the friendly staff also welcome our furry friends.
What is it like to stay at Aloft Hotel Liverpool?
The rooms are kitted out to suit the wide range of people the hotel accommodates for. Finding a Nespresso machine in our room was a very pleasing touch (because we LOVE coffee). It definitely beats the standard coffee and tea facilities you find in most hotels. In addition, the alarm with built-in Bluetooth speaker is great for enjoying a relaxing playlist after a long day seeing the sights (or shopping). Free Wifi also allows for the usual “Netflix binge before bed” many of us now undertake.
There was also a lovely view of the city from our room on the 6th floor. Both of the cathedrals were visible, as well as the iconic St John’s tower where the local radio station broadcasts from.
What about the look? A darker colour scheme of woods and grey is used within the rooms paired with soft lighting. This creates a comfortable, cosy atmosphere. Perfect for unwinding after a long hot shower in the rooms ensuite shower room. And the bed? Exceptionally comfortable.
But before bed, you have to eat! Luckily the hotel also manages and runs NYL restaurant & bar on the ground floor.
NYL Restuarant & Bar Liverpool
The ground floor restaurant in the hotel, NYL, offers a taste of New York in Merseyside. The restaurant area is very well presented, with an high-class vibe going on. Combine this with the live acoustic sets playing every Friday & Saturday at the restaurant and you have the recipe for the ideal romantic date night.
Whether it be the cocktails or the food, this establishment has a great combination of NY cuisine with a touch of Liverpool. For example, there is a wide range of cocktails on the drinks menu, many of which use the city’s own spirit, Liverpool Gin. We tried the aptly named Sgt Pepper. With Liverpool Valencian Orange gin combined with Strawberry, Mint and Lime flavours you are in for a treat. Combine this with the dash of crushed black peppercorns on top and this was a surprisingly refreshing drink!
The Food at NYL Restaurant & Bar Liverpool
With a superb evening menu, NYL caters for a whole spectrum of tastes. There’s a good selection of starters, mains and desserts available with a grill section of the menu for meat eaters like me. The mussels were an interesting starter. They came with a coconut milk sauce which was bursting with Thai flavours. Having never tried them this way before, we really enjoyed the flavour.
There are few things better than a perfectly cooked steak for the main course if you are a meat eater. I ordered the Sirloin medium-rare and it was a really enjoyable dish, cooked exactly to order. There are also some great vegetarian options available on the menu including a personal home cooking favourite of mine, lentil dhal curry.
What about desserts? If you have room, there are some interesting desserts you can try. The unbaked cheesecake of the day was a delight. Served with a caramel shard and a crunchy biscuit base it was delicious to finish off the meal.
Where is Aloft Hotel Liverpool & NYL Restaurant & Bar?
As mentioned Aloft Hotel and the NYL Restaurant and Bar are in an ideal location for Liverpool attractions. Sitting on North John St just a stone’s throw away from Liverpool One, and the Docks you are never far away from something wondrous to see or do. And with rooms available from £59 per night you might just want to put Liverpool on your list!
